The port and the lighthouse of San Nicolò
The port and lighthouse of San Nicolò is the northernmost entrance to the Lido of Venice and the entire lagoon.
It is located between Punta Sabbioni and the Lido and is the main access to the port of Venice.
Being the main point of access from the sea to the Serenissima, the Venetian Republic protected it with two fortifications: the San Nicolò fort, also on the island of Lido, and the Sant’Andrea fort (on the island of the same name). For the same reason, in the Austrian era, the Torre Massimiliana was also built in Sant’Erasmo. Today the Port of San Nicolò is affected by major works due to the MOSE project.
Walking along the outer dam that protects the port, after a couple of kilometers, you reach the Lighthouse of San Nicolò, on the northern tip of the island. You can get there on foot or by bike, after entering the pine forest behind the Giovanni Nicelli airport, passing the Dam. You can stop at this point for an interlude immersed in tranquility and contemplate the sea before returning to the beaches of San Nicolò: looking towards the mainland, you can also admire another lighthouse, that of Punta Sabbioni.
