San Francesco del Deserto, the small island of the Saint of Assisi

Travel tips

For those seeking a corner of land where the days are marked only by silence and contemplation, the island of San Francesco del Deserto is the ideal place.

The Venice Lagoon has more than 118 islets to discover.

For those seeking a corner of land where the days are marked only by silence and contemplation, the island of San Francesco del Deserto is the ideal place.

Covering only four hectares and located between Sant’Erasmo and Burano, this island has been home to a monastery of Friars Minor since the 13th century.

It is said that the Saint of Assisi passed through here in 1220 in search of a quiet and secluded place to pray and meditate, and for this reason it was given to the friars by the noble Michiel family. Archaeological excavations in the 20th century then confirmed what had been handed down by tradition.

The current name originated in the 15th century, when the island lay abandoned for some time.

Today, worshippers and visitors are welcome every day from 9.00 am to 11.00 am and from 3.00 pm to 5.00 pm.

The Monastery is closed on the morning of 17 September (Feast of the Stigmata of St Francis) and on the morning of 4 October (Feast of St Francis).
The visit is guided by a Franciscan and is free.

Those who want to stay a few days to meditate can make arrangements in advance by calling 041 5286863 or via the contact details on the San Francesco del Deserto site.
